CommScope unveils next-gen PON suite to accelerate XGS-PON moves

CommScope announced a new cloud-based product suite that aims to make it easier for network operators to deploy XGS-PON while getting the most out of their investments in fiber broadband projects.

The Cloud-to-Edge Next-Gen PON solution suite consists of the new CommScope FLX PON OLT and ONU portfolio, ServAssure domain management and ServAssure NXT performance management software, fiber connectivity solutions, and engineering and project management services.

The announcement comes as more network operators, such as Lumen Technologies and Windstream, have continued to expand and upgrade their fiber broadband networks, increasingly using XGS-PON. Commsope said its open architecture will help service providers to further accelerate these expansions, also supporting the rollout of microservices and pay-for-use models.

Jeff Heynen, Vice President, Broadband Access and Home Networking at Dell’Oro Group, recently noted that PON equipment spending was up 32% year-over-year in 2021. He stated, “2021 was a record year for PON equipment spending, with some of the highest growth coming from the North American market, where expansion projects and fiber overbuilds are picking up considerably. These fiber expansion projects show no signs of slowing heading into 2022.”

The software-based aspects of the architecture are designed to enable both disaggregated and aggregated PON architectures and the ability to use public and private cloud environments and multi-vendor strategies to achieve more affordable and faster PON deployment, according to CommScope.

CommScope also said the domain and performance management capabilities also help improve network visibility and, in turn, quality of experience for customers with the ability to identify and resolve issues remotely, reducing the operational expenses and complexity associated with truck rolls and managing repair schedules.

The new product suite will be ready for lab trials in the third quarter.

The Cloud-to-Edge Next-Gen PON solution suite will be on display next week at ANGA COM, the European broadband convention taking place in Cologne, Germany.
